[ 당신의 양심, 양심의 당신 Your Conscience, Conscience’s You]

이 프로젝트는 전시, 서점, 설치 미술, 독서 공간 사이 어딘가에 위치합니다. 크리스 로가 쓴 ‘도둑에 관한, 도둑을 위한, 도둑과 함께하는’ 단편 소설 모음집 『속삭임의 도시, 도둑들의 집』의 출간을 기념하여 마련된 공간입니다. 해당 작품집은 지난 5년간 다듬고 발전시켜온 글들을 담았습니다. 도둑에 관한 첫 글은 2021년 d / p 에서 열린 전시 『우리 같은 도둑들』을 위해 시작되었습니다. 이 출판물에는 총 열세 편의 이야기가 담겨있습니다. 각 이야기는 도둑의 잠재적 정의와 도덕적 복잡성을 탐구합니다. 이는 영화와 소설에서 미화된 도둑들에 관한 이야기가 아닙니다. 우리 가까이에서 벌어지는 때로는 미묘하고, 모호하며, 설명하기 어려운 범죄를 저지르는 도둑들에 관한 이야기입니다. 시간이 도둑이 될 수 있다(Time is a thief)는 고전적 관념처럼, 이 이야기들은 실제로 무엇이 훔치는 행위를 구성하는지, 그리고 그러한 행동과 연결된 갈등, 복잡한 감정, 그리고 밀려오는 죄책감의 잔상들에 대해 질문하고 있습니다.

크리스 로의 시각 작업 역시 이러한 주제 사이를 오가며 흐릅니다. 그는 인쇄의 개념과 기법 중 ‘재현’이 지닌 기묘한 본질에 관심이 있습니다. 특히, 재현 가능하면서도 동시에 완전히 재현이 불가능해질 수 있는 순간들에 매료되곤 합니다.

이번 전시에 선보이는 작품은 책이 만들어지는 찰나의 순간과 파편들을 포착해 재탄생 시켰습니다. 흔히 ‘대량 생산’을 떠올리는 책의 고정관념에서 벗어나, 이곳에서 세상에 단 하나뿐인 독립된 개체가 됩니다. 작가의 손끝에서 탄생한 표지는 매번 다른 결과물을 만들어 냅니다. 책의 텍스트와 스프레드 디자인 역시 정해진 규칙이 아닌 직관과 즉흥에 기대어 완성되었습니다. 이는 완벽한 재생산을 거부하는 비정형적 방법을 보이고 있습니다.

이 전시는 무인으로 운영됩니다. 이곳의 책들은 누군가에게 판매될 가능성을 품은채 놓여져 있습니다. 그러나 그 어떤 감시나 보호 없이 오롯이 홀로 존재합니다. 하지만 우리는 믿습니다. 이 책들이 도둑맞지 않고 정당하게 주인을 찾아갈 것이라는 사실을요. 이 책들이 올바른 대우를 받고 온전히 보존되기를 바라는 이 마음 - 신뢰와 양심, 의식, 이 세상에 선한 것이 있기를 바라는 희망 - 은 크리스 로를 끊임없이 매료시키는 또 다른 주제입니다. 아무도 보지 않는 순간, 우리는 어느 지점에서 비로소 옳은 일을 선택할까요? 그리고 우리가 언제 그 선함을 지켜낼 능력을 상실할까요?

이곳 전시장에는 수많은 책이 놓여 있습니다. 여기 있는 책들은 모두 구매하실 수 있습니다. 책은 한 권당 29,000원입니다. 분명히 말씀드릴 수 있는 건, 이 책 판매로는 결코 수익을 내지 못 할 것 입니다. 네, 슬프지만 사실입니다. 만약 여러분의 마음이 허락한다면, 이 책 한 권을 구매해 더 나은 미래를 만들어갈 수 있도록 힘을 보태주세요. 전시장 한 편에는 판매용 포스터도 마련되어 있습니다. 가격은 10,000원이며, 마찬가지로 수익을 남기지 않습니다. 

저희는 더 좋은 날들이 오기를, 더 나은 미래가 펼쳐지기를 꿈꿉니다. 그리고 저희는 여러분을 신뢰합니다. 우리가 지금보다 더 나은 존재가 될 수 있다고, 더 나은 인간이 될 수 있다고 믿습니다.

This project sits somewhere between an exhibition, a bookstore, an installation and a reading space. Here is a space opened for the launch of, Of Whispers, Of Thieves, a compendium of short stories, for, about and with thieves written by Chris Ro. The collection spans writings that have been in development over the past five years. The original writings and concept of thieves began in the year 2021 for the exhibition, Thieves Like Us at the space d / p. This publication is a collection of thirteen stories in total. Each story examines the potential definition of thieves and the moral complexities that exist with them. This is not about the thieves that have been glamourized in film and fiction. But more so, the thieves whose crimes are sometimes subtle, sometimes ambiguous and sometimes hard to describe. Similar to the age-old concept that time can also be a thief, this series of stories are curious about what actually constitutes stealing and the connected conflicts, complexities and afterthoughts associated with such actions.

The visual work of Chris Ro similarly ebbs back and forth between such themes. With his interest in the concepts and techniques of printing, he is fascinated by the curious nature of reproduction and the moments when something is reproducible but also can become completely irreproducible. Here in this exhibit, he has taken bits and process moments in the production of this book and recreated them into new works in and of themselves. There are moments where the book, typically in concept, is mass produced, now exists as independent, entirely unique units. Each cover is created by hand by the artist himself and is almost entirely different every time. Even the design of the text and spreads of the book are done through non-systematic methods relying on intuition and improvisation, two concepts that are antithetical to reproduction.   

This exhibit is also humanless. These books are here. They are here to potentially be sold. But they are also here, unguarded. Unwatched. There is an understanding that these books can be purchased. And not stolen. There is a hope that these books will be taken care of properly. Will be treated properly. This theme of trust, of conscience and consciousness, hope for what is good in this world, is another theme that continues to fascinate Chris. At what point do we do the right thing? At what point, are we incapable of doing the right thing?  

Here in this exhibition sit many, many of these books. These books here are all available for purchase. The cost is 29,000KRW per book. No matter what, we will never make any money from the sales of this book. Yes, sad. But true. If you are feeling generous, please purchase one of these books and help us to make a better future. There are also some posters here in this exhibit for sale too. The cost is 10,000KRW. Same thing. No profit here. We are hoping for better days. We are hoping for a better future. We believe you. We trust you. We believe we can be better. We believe we can be better human beings.
